with a side of hollandaise

little dutch girl

On Saturday B had to get a booster measles shot. He had received a note that his school records were on hold (meaning that he would not be able bid on classes next week) because they didn’t have his immunization records.

He thought that it meant that they had lost the copy of his records he had turned in at the beginning of the quarter. It seemed a little odd as this department had not been required to move, and besides with HIPPA et al you think they would be just a little more careful with someone’s medical records, especially those of a 30-something student (do you have any idea how impossible it can be to gather such information on someone over 25?). So he brought over another copy thinking the matter was cleared. Wrong!

It turns out that he was still missing one shot, despite receiving three over the summer. The good news was that he could get it for free (instead of $30) if he came to the Student Health Center on Saturday before 1pm. Only real issue was that he wanted to attend a class on Saturday morning at the Gleacher Center (downtown) that got out at noon.

It was decided that I would pick B up and we would go down to Hyde Park and take care of this. We arrived a little after 12:30pm and B decided to go in and I would drive around the block a few times. We were actually pretty low on gas, so it was lucky that I made it the three times around.

B reported that the staff were friendly. They gave him a doughnut. And apparently they had had a pretty busy morning. Reportedly he was the 253rd student (undergrad and grad) that they had seen that day. That is a lot of shots!

We got gas (it had been over a month since we filled the tank) and decided to grab something to eat. We went over to 57th street and amazingly found street parking that didn’t require feeding the meter. We decided to try Medici’s. B is a big fan of their baked goodies, but had never stopped at their sit down restaurant.

We were quickly seated at a little wooden booth right across from the kitchen. The table, the walls and just about everything else was covered in graffiti – it seems to be part of the ambiance. It was fun to watch the kitchen staff fill their orders. All of the food looked scrumptious. One of their specialties is eggspresso. Essentially they make scrambled eggs by using the steamer on the espresso machine.

I decided to go a little more high cal, and ordered the eggs benedict and a cup of hot chocolate. They actually offer three kinds: Ghirardelli (milk), Mexican (spicy), and Hollandaise (Dutch). I couldn’t resist and got the Hollandaise to go with my Hollandaise. I wasn’t disappointed. Everything was quite tasty.

We learned that Medici’s has been a Hyde Park tradition for several decades. It seems like one of those places where if you spent time at the University of Chicago and had somehow never been, that you missed out (or if you confessed to never having heard of it people would doubt that you ever attended the U of C). In addition to this restaurant and the bakery they also run the pub on campus. I hope to go back again soon.
