brothers & sisters & heroes

orange fluff

Don't have too much to say today. Since we have started watching television again, I have a couple of favorite shows:

  • Brothers & Sisters: The cast is just amazing. It would really be hard to go wrong here. Sally Fields is awesome. I do have some issues with the other woman. Her motivation seems off.

This show brings up all kinds of issues for me. In one a sister has to call 911 to get help for her brother. They are at said brother's apartment. This may sound kind of strange, but I sat here thinking, how does she know her brother's address to tell the dispatcher? See, I never knew my sister's address. I never went to her home. I only had it to give to the police when they showed up at my door oh so many years ago to tell me our mother had died, because it was written on the last piece of mail my mother sent me - a postcard asking that I send my sister money for an air conditioner.

I sit and watch the show in awe of these relationships that I never had and now never will. It is hard. But I also realized something the other day. Not so much realized, but was able to start to articulate what is different about me, and what can make things hard in the real world.

B had gotten the name of someone who works at Disney to call and do an information interview of sorts. We were talking about how he knew this guy. It turns out that he is the son of a friend of B's Dad. That's when it hit home. I don't know any friends of my Dad, let alone their offspring. And in some ways this is probably a good thing. But the connections I had to my Mom's friends are all about dried up.

I should point out too that this isn't the only connection B has to this person. It turns out that a classmate of B's whom we recently met up with also knows him. It just shows how small the world is.

I guess what I am trying to say is that if you have a sibling (that isn't totally crazy) do what you can to keep the relationship going. Also, as much as a pain as it can be to exchange pleasantries with your parents' friends, do it. You just never know when they could become important.

  • Heroes: It took me a couple of episodes to get hooked on this one. It seemed a bit crazy at first. It doesn't hurt that the character, Hiro, reminds me of B.
