day two
Today is the first Thursday of the month, which means it's a free day at The Huntington Library. I adore the gardens there, despite the weird hours (noon til 4pm). The roses were in bloom, although nearing the end. It really was a perfect day to go for a stroll.
We were hoping to get a reservation for tea, but apparently this is no longer a secret in LA. Oh well.
The crowds were actually pretty large. Lots of moms with strollers. Lots of tourists with cameras. It was interesting watching some of the women (in particular) pose. One woman had a way of holding her feet, and it looked like she was also clenching her bottom (I was sitting such that she was posing facing away from me).
I was there to take photos too, but not of people. I have a new card which in raw will allow me to take over a hundred photos. I didn't quite get there. Haven't really checked yet, but hope I got a few good ones.
The roses names are fun. There was one called "Brownie", but it didn't have any blooms on it. One was called "Gay Princess". Lots on the bride theme: "Blushing Bride", "Bridal White", etc.
We did get to see the new Conservatory. We walked through the rain forest, a cloud forest, and a bog. It was amazing how different each climate was.
We rested for a bit an area that was built to attract hummingbirds. The seemed to prefer a tall tree nearby, and especially enjoyed hanging out in the highest branches. So no hummingbird photos were to be had.
I went to the Children's Garden, but all the noise and general business of the area turned me off. It does seem that this place has become a hangout for the Bugaboo set.
On the way out we stopped in at the gift shop. They had some really beautiful glass ornaments. They even had squirrels! It was tempting not to add one or two to my ornament collection. I just wasn't sure I was ready to hang a squirrel on my tree.
