from turkeys to sheep

buy nothing

Here in the good old US of A, most people are feeling stuffed from overindulging on their Thanksgiving meals. While some are sitting back and relaxing, many are plotting their plan of attack at the mall tomorrow morning. With some stores opening as early as 5am, it is clear things are getting crazy out there. If I heard correctly, I believe at least one chain (I have blocked which one) has decided to open at 9pm until midnight tonight! Clearly the one upmanship has gone too far.

My email is loaded with messages from various retailers reminding me that their web stores are open 24/7. Many even threw in a discount or free shipping.

There is a way to stop it. You don't have to be a sheep and follow the herd. Simply don't go. Resist the urge to fight for a parking space at the mall. Resist the need to be pushed out of the way by bargain hunters. Resist further destroying your diet on mall food. Resist convincing yourself that the savings are worth putting up with long lines, overworked salespeople and the general unhappiness that is the mall on the day after Thanksgiving.

Here are some things to do instead:

  • Sleep in.

  • Make someone breakfast in bed.

  • Take advantage of your friends and family in town and enjoy quality time together.

  • Go to a museum.

  • Take a walk/hike.

  • Put your kitchen back in order.

  • Read a book.

  • Write al letter.

  • Knit/crochet.

  • Phone a friend.

  • Organize your photos.

  • Plan a vacation.
