turkey day quickly approaches

with a cherry on top

Thanksgiving is now a mere week away. We will be joining B's Uncle and Aunt (and cousins). We did this a couple of years ago when we were in town. There was a bit of miscommunication as to where the dinner would be held, and as a result we ended up carting a turkey and all the trimmings across the San Gabriel Valley.

This time around I will probably do the same. It seems that they have the renovation their home is still incomplete. What started as a small project that should have taken a few weeks, has turned into an eight month project with no end in sight. We were recently to their home and the kitchen was still draped in plastic.

We could of course offer to have them over to B's parent's house, but I have a feeling that they would decline. They have a history with the house and I don't think B's Aunt will ever visit again if she can help it.

Really I can't blame her. They lived in the house for a while when they first moved to Los Angeles. One of the boys managed to fall out of the second story window. Thankfully his fall was cushioned by the trash cans below, or his injuries would have been far more serious.

And of course, there was the time that the stove nearly exploded. B's Mom pointed out the spot where it happened. She hasn't mentioned it in a while though. She also used to go on and on about how one of her tablespoons disappeared after one of her sisters had stayed at the house for a week or two. I went as far as to look up the pattern on line, but it would have been over $50 to replace a single spoon. I have a feeling B's Mom paid about that for the entire set.

B's Uncle is insisting on getting us the turkey. Most of the local grocery stores are offering various deals where you can get a turkey for five dollars when you spend a certain amount. He is always giving us food. I haven't figured out if he really likes going to the grocery store or what exactly. I find grocery stores very interesting places, but I have a feeling my obsession is quite different from his.

At least I lucked out and found a copy of my favorite Martha Stewart Cookbook at the library, and was able to copy both the cranberry sauce and corn souffle recipes (they are on the same page). I did make the cranberry sauce last year and even sent some back to B's Uncle via his parents who had visited us in Chicago about a week before the big day.

I just wish I was more in the holiday spirit. Perhaps if I can find so red currant jam to make said cranberry sauce.
